Charlotte, The Queen City of the South. Charlotte was the name given this city in honor of Queen Charlotte of England. A young princess in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Germany, Charlotte in 1761, went to England to become the wife of George III and Queen of England. The town of Charlotte was incorporated in 1768. Charlotte was the scene of many historical events. The first (but not final) Declaration of Independence was signed here on May 20th, 1775. Lord Cornwallis, commander of the British Army during the Revolutionary War, called Charlotte "The Hornet's Next," because of the activities of the patriot troops. Drinking Fountain, East Trade of fork at East and Elizabeth Avenues, marks the site of the battle of Charlotte, September 26th, 1780. Andrew Jackson, seventh president of the United States, was born near here, and James K. Polk, the eleventh president, was born just outside of Charlotte, at Pineville. The last full meetings of the Confederate cabinet, presided over by Jefferson Davis, was held at the Phifer Home of Charlotte, on April 22nd-26th, 1865. One of the outstanding places of interest in Charlotte is the Mint Museum of Art. Originally this building was the United States Mint, established by the Act of Congress in 1835; and at that time this Southern Region was the only gold mining territory in the United States. During the War between the States operation of the mint was suspended, and the building was used first as Confederate Headquarters, and later as a hospital. Coinage was never resumed after this War. The building, on its present site, is now the Mint Museum of Art. In the galleries are displayed historic relics, ceramics, native nad foreign handicrafts. Loan collections and the works of local artists are exhibited. Today, Charlotte, with a population of over 100,000 is the largest city and most important commercial center in the two Carolinas. Eleven main highways enter Charlotte. Charlotte Municipal Airport, which is just a few minutes drive from the cener of the city, has direct connections to any point in the world; handles many passengers daily, as well as giving Air Mail and Express service. From Charlotte radiates an ever expanding textile industry, and she has more full-fashion knitting machines than any other city of the South. Within a radius of one hundred and fifty miles are seven hundred and ninety-five plants, operating more than ten million spindles. The third radio station established in the United States, and the first in the South, is in Charlotte--Station WBT, key station of the Dixie network of the Columbia Broadcasting System. Charlotte is also the home of Station WSOC on the National and Mutual Networks. Charlotte is a substantial city--beautiful homes--clean streets--two colleges--and no less than one hundred and forty-six churches. A city where living is pleasant--toil honorable--where recreation is plentiful--and where industry thrives.
