A variation of the state seal is at the top flanked by red "2" protectors, and a red guilloche is below. The Sewing Machine (or The Sewing Girl) by Francis W. Edmonds is the lower right corner. The vignette shows a woman in a voluminous dress, seated on an elegant chair, as she intently operates a sewing machine. An intricate end panel is at the left. Extremely rare and not plated in Haxby. There are variations in borders and denomination lettering across the center. This simple note has a patterned border enclosing the text, and the denomination is in black with an outline around each letter. Signed by the mayor. Poughkeepsie, NY - D. Coolidge pay at the Office of Discount and Deposit of the Manhattan Company 12-1/2 Cents Oct. 5, 1815 NY-1695 UNL, Harris UNL. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. A rare, early fractional note unlisted in Haxby and Harris, and possibly unique. According to Harris, a cashier-signed bill. The series is mentioned, but not listed, in Haxby. A bolded 12 ? is at the center, and the white outlined textual denomination is on a dark rectangle at the top. Printed by P. & S. Potter. We have handled only one other from the issuer, the Harris Collection note, a 3 cents note from the same series, which sold for $345 in 2003. Plattsburgh, NY - Carlisle D. Tylee, Payable at New York, Albany or Whitehall [&] "Receivable on board lake Champlain Steam Boats" 37-1/2 Cents July 28, 1815 Harris H11. PCGS Very Fine 25. This is a second amazing note from the intriguing title. The layout and diagnostics are similar to the 6 ? cents. A wide format note printed by J. Oram, New York. Payable at three locations as noted on the top border: New-York, Albany and Whitehall. The specific merchants are listed in the obligation text across, below the "37 1/2" and written denomination. Along the bottom is the clause, "Receivable on board lake Champlain Steam Boats." Oddly, a Rarity-6 in Harris, which is too liberal. Exceedingly rare and important. The condition is superb for such a note, with three wide margins pointing toward this being at the bottom of its sheet array. Bright and boldly signed. This was an ambitious project to circulate a high denomination, but it is well made. This counterfeit "C" note from the occupational title shows the cowboy vignette seen above at center right.
