Arabic script is indeed read right to left, but date numerals go left to r= ight. I am not sure whether this is due to the fact that the numeral charac= ters originally entered Arabic script from the Devangari script of northe= rn India, which is normally written from left to right. Probably much more = than you wanted to know, but hey...
The date side of the coin is upside down in your image. Flipping it over I'= d say it looks more like 1263. this would mean that it is actually an issue= of Sharif Moulay 'Abd al-Rahman (not Sulieuman as I said before) struck in= AD 1846.
That is really interesting about the provenance. Were there any other oddit= ies like this in the material?
