Autonomous Coins Public Deposited

  • A name given to coins struck by such cities and territories as required no external authority to issue them. They are common in the Greek series and to some extent in the Roman; but the provinces of the latter empire were usually restricted to the extent that they were permitted to strike only in cop- per.
