Alcorn, James Lusk Public Deposited
Born near Golconda. Educated at Cumberland College. Practiced law in Mississippi. Married in 1839 to Mary C. Stewart who died in 1849. Married in 1850 to Amelia Walton Glover. Member of the Mississippi Senate 1848 to 1856. During the Civil War he was a brigadier general in the Army of Mississippi. He was taken prisoner at Helena, Arkansas.
Following the war he was elected to the United States Senate in 1865. The Senate refused to seat him. Elected Governor of Mississippi in 1869. He resigned November 30, 1871, to serve in the United States Senate. He remained in the Senate until May 3, 1877. He died at Eagle Nest, Mississippi. In 1874 he commissioned a 39 mm mint medal (Julian SC-2) to be struck for Alcorn University. Dies were by William Barber. Twenty five medals were struck and delivered to Alcorn in June 1874.
