Born in Buffalo, New York. Received bachelor’s degree form Cornell University in 1928, master’s from Harvard in 1929 and doctorate from University of North Carolina.
Taught English literature at Carnegie Institute of Technology 1929-1931, University of Tennessee 1931-1945 and Knox College 1945 until retirement.
Author of books on world crowns.
