Early Paper Money of America (NNP Edition)|
£8,750 (£2,500 and £6,250) in New Tenor Bills of Credit issued pursuant to the Feb. 5, 1744/45 and Mar. 4, 1744/45 Acts for Cape Breton expedition. Same as the four highest denominations of the Feb. 14, 1743/44 issue but with “1744” cut into signature area on the face. Same silver equivalent as Dec. 2, 1740 issue. Old and New Tenor value printed from type and ornaments on the back with the date of authorization. Same signers appear as on the Feb. 14, 1743/44 issue plus Gideon Cornell.
The £2 Old Tenor counterfeit bill was made by Owen Syllavan (Sullivan) who was hanged for counterfeiting in New York City on May 10, 1756.
