Daniel Fowle, the printer, and Robert Louist Fowle, his nephew, severed their partnership in the printing business in 1774 over a difference of political opinion. Robert Louist Fowle was a Tory and was arrested on April 15, 1777 for participation in making counterfeits of this issue. He apparently removed some type and ornaments from the former enterprise to make them. Because of this counterfeiting the House of Representatives on June 17, 1777 ordered all bills issued in 1775 to be called in and redeemed. Robert Louist Fowle then agreed to furnish evidence for the State, but escaped from prison in August 1777 and fled.
