User Collection ÖffentlichkeitEarly Paper Money of America (NNP Edition)|$400,000 ($200,000 and $200,000) in Bank Notes of the Massachusetts Bank, incorporated as a private bank on Feb. 7, 1784 with a capital of $1,600,000. Plates were engraved in Philadelphia and notes were printed in Boston on laid paper, $100,000 being from the “large plate” and $100,000 from the “small plate.” Another $200,000 was approved on Oct. 18,
1784. The bills bear written dates beginning on July 5, 1784. The notes were not to be re-circulated after July 25, 1785 but this was subsequently countermanded. Signers were James Bowdoin, as president, and Samuel Osgood, as cashier. A special Act to protect the notes of the Bank against counterfeiting was passed Mar. 16, 1784.
