$1,250,000 (£500,000) in Bills of Credit was issued, of which $250,000 was authorized on April 22, 1776 and $1,000,000 on May 9, 1776. The date of April 2, 1776 on the bills was the beginning of the session. Engraved on copper plates by GL (Gabriel Lewyn, a Baltimore goldsmith), their initials appear on a few varieties. Vignettes appear on each bill. Some bills contain mottoes. Printed on both thick and thin laid paper. Some bills show part of a crown as a watermark. Fractional denominations are smaller than the higher denominations. The original plate for the $20 bill exists. Signers were Willis Alston, J. Bradford, William Haywood, G. Hill, Benjamin McCulloch, David Sumner, J. Webb, and William Williams. See the prior issue for the redemption history. This issue contains 56 varieties, the largest number of varieties of any American paper money issue.
