Rob,
Then I guess we agree......
This issue has been brewing since the group was formed and there is a long audit trail of this in the archives. It has not been discussed here lately, but that does not mean the concerns of a large group of members has diminished. Your individual may have precipitated the decision, but it was a decision that needed to be made (a club only group).
I can only assume Dennis has no plans to shut down this list. No one can prevent anyone from forming and joining another list. Besides, Dennis can't shut down this list. Only Bob Merchant can. And if the list was shut down, we can start up as many lists as we want. Therefore, the concept of a public list is, in the final analysis, outside the domain of C4. However, it would be possible for C4 to sponsor an open list as well as a closed list. I see pros and cons to that concept. So..... C4/Bob must make another decision- is this list to be shut down? Or turned over to some individual (or left with Bob)? Or run under the auspices of C4 as a public membership list? Remember, this is not truly a "public" list in the sense that it is universal property. Someone owns it and holds the "keys". Right now that is presumably Bob Merchant. Will he own the list? Suppose Bob gets tired of this coin stuff and quits. Who will take over? This isn't targeted at Bob per se, I'm just trying to convey the issues that could crop up over time.
Neil
