I like the discussion on grading and grade vs rarity in regards to
value in colonials. Seems that colonials are similiar to federal
issues in that it is not a CD (love that annalogy) nor an investment
vehicle! I also like the comment on the gold bars and how they are
selling them. I have always been very leery of hoards comming on the
market and dealers pushing either by directly stating or insinuating
that this is a great deal (investment). I love the dealer (who is
also selling the gold bars in partnership) who advertises that this
coin in 1989 was selling for a zillion dollars and now its only going
to cost you $5,000! Wow it's 80% less then it's high - he wants you
to think that now is the time to invest in it - I always think of the
poor guy who paid the zillion dollars for the coin in 1989 when all
the advertisements said buy now it will just go up - very rare! I
think sometimes it's just as interesting seeing the hype in coin
collecting as it is collecting - both are a study of history and
human nature. - and I think at times we all may get caught up in the
hype too (I hate to admit that I actually have a coin or two in my
collection that was bought over 5 years ago that I could buy now at
retail for less than what I paid for it).
Well I finally got into Yahoo - thanks byron for sending the info on
signing up - I am waiting to see how much junk mail yahoo will now be
sending me after they give away my e-mail address! Hope they don't
though!
