Hello all.
I hope you won't mind me stepping in to reveal my further ignorance concern=
ing colonial coinage. I attach an image of one of my first forays into thi=
s interesting collecting field, a wood 33 "BITIT" token. My main question =
is: In the literature has anyone ever identified the official British/Irish=
model for the reverse type? According to my copy of Cross the reverse typ=
e depicts Hibernia holding a shamrock, but I am unable to find this iconogr=
aphic type for official coinage. In fact, to my eye, most of this type loo=
ks like it is derived from the seated Britannia type. The little curl in t=
he lower right looks like a detail of Britannia's shield that is normally o=
veremphasized on Canadian Blacksmith Tokens (see Wood 1-4, 11, 13-14, 18). =
In the upper right it almost looks like the figure is holding a fleur-de-l=
is shaped object. Or am I misunderstanding the features of the design? I =
would appreciate any thoughts that others might have on the model for this =
reverse type. Thanks in advance.
