    David,
I agree wholeheartedly. We as the collecting community expressed no public concern or outcry when buyer's fees were increased to 15%. I guess the silence of the numismatic community sent the message that we didn't care. If we didn't care, then why not see how far the fees could be raised before we decided to complain. Thanks for making us aware of the fee increase for Christie's David. The colonial community is a very small part of the hobby, but letters to the editor of Coin World and Numismatic News will be noticed by the hobby and the big companies do read these.

I just noticed in a recent email from Christie's that their new buyer's fees will be increased to 19.5%. I think that this could signal a round of increases with the other auction houses following suit. It's only a couple of years since they jumped the fees from 10% to 15%. This is clearly an alarming trend, with levels going to 25%, 30% or more over the next several years at this rate. I guess we could all just factor these increases in and reduce our bids accordingly, but generally most people don't, which will mean that those of us participating in these sales will end up paying through the nose, as usual. I just emailed Christie's and told them that I would reconsider bidding in their sales as a result of this increase. While it may not have as much impact as if Bill Gates or Laurence Rockefeller was upset, if many potential bidders responded, they might rethink this policy.
