    I'm close enough to get ADSL but stick with a 56k modem, which usually me=
    ans 40-44k, just like you Mike. I also avoid Microsoft when I can (though =
    at work we're about th switch to Outlook, which we're all dreading, even (o=
    r maybe especially) the IT folks)).


    But it's the comment about a 1200 baud modem that makes me write. I reme=
    mber working with acoustic couplers and thinking that 1200 was the fastest =
    I would ever need because I didn't read faster than that. That was back wh=
    en I actually read every single word of every email message I got. With sp=
    am and other sorts of junk I'd guess I now only read less than 1/4 of what =
    I get and HTML and JPGs take up more bandwidth than ASCII art.
