I believe the Mott token was probably struck over a period of many years,
very possibly into the 1840's when his sons Jordan Jr. and Jacob were in
business. Judging from the texture of the token and its feel, I think the
die was a product of the period around 1800 (+ or - a few years). The
workmanship on the die does not in my opinion compare to the later New York
tokens of ~ 1830's which show a superior quality. Though conjecture, I feel
a succesful and long standing business of silversmiths and watchmakers would
not have gone for such a token in the 1830's when superior craftmanship was
easily available.
Having said that, there is very little to go on as far as determining when
exactly the first token hit the streets.
As to genealogy, William and John were not from the same direct line. Were
they cousins or distant relatives I do not know. Jordan Sr. was the son of
Isaac Mott. Jordan had 7 children. Jame S., his second child, was the first
to go into business with him. I do not know exactly when, but apparently
from the directories pretty soon, he parted. He is reported to have died in
an insane assylum. Jordan Jr., his fourth child, followed, and then Jacob
his fifth. Garrell and Malavus followed. Where these four the Mott Bro.
listed in 1840? I don't know. William and JC were not Jordan's sons. Again,
how related were they i do not know.
As to the chronometers, a key factor is that Jordan was not only a
clockmaker but an importer of watches, clocks and chronometers.
