Hi All! Below is a response I received from the British Museum with respect to the existance of Regal 1776 Irish Halfpence. Wow - they only took less than a half day to respond. I'm not personally going to order a picture but if someone from the group would like to do further communication, here's where you can start... Have FUN!
Ray

Type 3 of the Irish 'London Coinage' consisted of halfpennies dated 1775 and 1776, the latter being slightly rarer, though both are reasonably common. Counterfeits of genuine ones are also fairly common, as is the case for most late 18th century copper coins of Britain and Ireland. > > Naturally we have examples of the 1775-6 issue, and you can order photographs if you wish. If you send details of what you want (b&w, colour, size etc) to my colleague who deals with photographic orders, she will let you have details of the cost. Her name is Janet Larkin, and her email address is jlarkin@thebritishmuseum.ac.uk. > > I hope this information is of help to you. > > Yours sincerely > Dr BJ Cook > Duty Curator 13-17 May > > > >>> Ray Williams <njraywms@optonline.net> 05/15 10:57 pm >>> > Hi ! > My name is Ray Williams from Trenton NJ, USA. One of object of contention in a numismatic research group that I'm a part of, is: Does there exist regal Irish halfpence of King George III dated 1776, or are the know examples with that date contemporary counterfeits? Any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated and if genuine specimens exist, could I obtain a picture of one. > Thank You, > Ray Williams >
