My two coppers worth:
This thread seems like misspent bandwidth me. Byron is wedded to his
die and punch (ouch) links, John to the value of analysis for
authorship. As usual, the middle way may be preferred, a little from
column A and a little from column B.
However much we think we know what happened with our favorite coins,
dies and punches didn't have to stay in one shop's possession for
their lives. Nor does a certain percentage of gold or other trace
element in base metal coins necessarily prove a common provenance.
As for finding an hypothesis in a forest of facts, that's the
preferred way of doing any sort of research. Those who pursue the
opposite course are eventually unmasked.
