Ray:
There could have been many different A punches, or any other letter punch for that matter, used on the NJ coinage. Or there could have been just two (I thought I saw two broken A's), probably not just one (in the case of the A), or a series of indeterminate number. We'll never know until we do photo overlays or CAD comparisons.
To me, however, the number is not what's important about punches. What is are the ramifications for the attributions Breen made for the state coinages and the links he made among them based primarily on the broken A. We already know his horseshoe shaped U isn't one unique punch, so there goes the "Mould sold his tools to Machin" theory that Breen essentially made up (there's no eveidence for it). If punches do not necessarily (emphasis on this word) point to authorship, then Breen's attribution constructs fall to pieces and we're back to the written records, which are the best evidence we have anyway.
In descending order of reliability for suggesting authorship of an emission using numismatic evidence only: idiosyncracies of manufacture (i.e., evidence of the planchet cutter, rollers, lack of mixing/pouring skills, etc.), type/color/makeup of planchet stock, whole die links, central device puncheon links, small device and letter puncheon links.
