Brian,
There is an interesting letter from Sir William Johnson to Earl of
Hillsborough in 1768, speculating on the opening of a copper mine in
the Lake Superior area.Mostly conjecture on the quality of the ore,
costs, transportation (the French in Canada had previously lost money
on the venture), and how to maintain friendly relations with Indians.
