I read John's article, too. I agree with your asessment of it,
it's an overview of the NY scene in the late 1780's. It's based
upon the received Breenian wisdom.
As an iconoclast, I wondered when I read it where the evidence
was for the attributions made in the article. I'm still looking.
I'm more intrigued about what Major Eli Leavenworth was making in
the fall of 1788 in NY and was he related to the Mark Leavenworth
who had a part ownership interest in the CCC in 1787 and who was
interrogated in April 1789 about the CCC?
It's easy to hang different hats on the Machin-Atlee peg, because
it's become a very big one over the years. But, like the emperor
in the fairy tale, who was really naked, the Machin peg shrivels
away when you look closely at it.
