I will not be going to C4 this year as I have other commitments.
Specifically, basketball coaching conflicts (coaching one of the top
middle school girls basketball teams in the county/region (northern
NJ).
I was suprised the RR40 did not sell but was glad to see the triple
punch CC sold to an astute buyer.
With the advent of instrumentation analysis and optical microscopy
methods the determination of a coin being cast or struck obviously
favors these methods over specific gravity. Specific gravity as M.H.
indicates measures only mass. It is therefore reserved for regal coin
testing which have "known alloy make-ups and percentages" and
therefore in terms of specific specific gravity has "NO REAL VALUE"
for contemporary counterfeits.
Casts have the same weight range as struck specimens in most cases. I
do not see it as a helpful tool to any degree. Most CC's at 145 gr.
are well-made and most at 75gr. are not very well made - generally.
Is there something MUCH deeper here???
There is however a good article on specific gravity in Metallurgy in
Numismatics IV if anyone is interested. Specific gravity today in
terms of its value with investigators having instrumentation analysis
avaialbility consider it an obsolete scientific method for numismatic
attributions but this one author tries to keep it alive-and does.
With the M.29 1/2-L I will see if Bill can bring it over my house and
possibly we can do the same image transfer process - Ray.
If I was at home in my library I could of course post much more
information on S.G..
RR40 discussion is old news so we can discuss or argue on this new
topic. That's what this Chat Room is all about ...in my opinion.
Some more counterfiets on E-Bay in two weeks. - 2002-10-07
