Re: post #8185 and 8186 Found some more info on this interesting c/s. JPL thanks for your earlier input! Got this info from J.Gavin Scott's: British Countermarks on Copper and Bronze Coins.
---------------------------------------------------------------
"#77 Perthshire Deanston 77.1 & 77.2 Adelphi Cotton Works or Deanston Cotton Mills. These cotton spinning mills were erected in 1785 on the south bank of the river Teith to the west of Doune by John Buchanan of Carston and his brothers, formerly linen yarn merchants with connections in Manchester. At the time they employed about 700 workers ........ appearing before the Select Committee enquiring into payment of wages in 1842, James Smith (appointed as manager in 1808) said that his establishment always paid in current coin and that the truck system did not operate there. it is probable, however, that the truck system applied at the mills BEFORE 1808 and that these countermarked pieces are truck tickets. The Alelphi countermarks seem to be earlier, probably all dating from before 1794. Similar countermarks also appear on silver coins - see Davis 89,93."
---------------------------------------------------------------
J.Gavin Scott notes in a chart that this particular Deanston c/s is also found on:
1/2d Charles II (Batty 3452), Bawbee Charles II 1/2d (Davis 94), George II 1/2d (Davis 94), George III Counterfeit 1/2d (Bliss Sale Catalog), George II 1/2d, George III penny 1797 (Duffield 270), Dundee 1/2d (SNC Nov.1905), W.Crooms Manchester 1/2d (SCMB Mar.1965), Irish 1/2d George II (J.G.Scott collection)
Interesting to note the use of a counterfeit George III 1/2d as a host coin for this counterstamp after 1794, which is when Scott notes the Deanston c/s replaces the Adelphi c/s.
