Actually Stan, most dissertations are copyrighted and a single copy
for personal use probably falls under "fair use" but depositing a
copy in a library probably doesn't. I am not a lawyer but did a
stint wrking for the company that publishes virtually all US and
Canadian dissertations (then UMI now "Bell & Howell Information and
Learning"). I know that all copies we sold caried a copyright notice.

Thanks to John for getting a copy of this. British dissertations are
notoriously difficult to get. Some of the rules require you to get
per, mission of the ex-student, who may be difficult to track down.
And no single company sells them so you have to go to the university
usually. Maybe it's changed. I hope so.

Stan, does the WVU web site have any restrictions on use of the
dissertations? It would be great if they became public.

    Dan
