I have a screen saver that sequences through photos of my kids, coins, etc.,
posting enlarged versions of them to the screen. Last night, I noticed
something odd on my 1787 small/thick planchet Immunis Columbia. The
photograph isn't very good because it was taken with an early digital
camera, but it seems to show something underneath the "M" in Columbia.
Looking through my references, I have been unable to find mention of
undertypes for small/thick planchet 1787 Immunis Columbia coppers. Is anyone
aware of an undertype for these pieces? What about re-punches over
blundered punches? If it is a letter, the apparent orientation is certainly
odd. (I'm pretty sure it isn't "NE" or "XII".)
I am aware of the NJ 26-s undertypes on the large planchet specimens.
The image is attached, though it isn't very clear. I will post a better
image when I get a chance, unless this is a common occurence or simply an
aberration in the photograph itself. I could very well have seen something
written on this and forgotten it.
