Clem:
The electron beam that is aimed at the coin penetrates the
surface anywhere from 2 to 10 microns deep. The xylol or Care
coating on your coins is thicker than that and will influence the
readings. You'll probably have silicon showing up in the readout
from the degreaser or Care. The patina on the surface of the
coppers, which has formed over the centuries, will be what the
XRF reads unless the surface is really clean, i.e., cleaned down
to the bare red copper. The only way I know of around this, using
XRF, is to take multiple readings from different places and then
comparing them.
