Hi all:
I thought I might add my 2 cents to the XRF study.
Steffanelli and I were, I believe the first to use XRF
on coins independently. While in Rome in 1960 I
bought several obviously counterfeit gold dolllars.
With the cooperation of a friend at MIT's metallurgy
lab we ran tests on the coins. First we did Laue back
scattering, as compared to a real dollar. The
counterfeits had a strong crystallation structure, and
were obviously cast copies. The XRF test as to
composition showed the gold to be high, as I remember
about 92%. I published the results sometime in 1961
in Coin world. It hard to believe this was done over
42 years ago!!!
So we are back to really doping something
scientifically on this area.
