I know that Ray T., Phil M. and Charley S. are
actively involved in trying to get good information on
the origin of varius coins based upon metal analysis.
It will be interesting to see how this develops and I
think we can all thank Ray T. for his demonstration at
the C-4 meeting. As an aside, last night I ran across
a paper in The Numismatist from October 1973 titled,
"Discovery of a Wood's Hibernia Harp-Left Halfpenny
Die Trial for the Years 1723 and 1724" by Stanley
Sherr. What was interesting in the article in regard
to this discussion is that a break down of the coins
metal content based on X-ray fluorescence and
spectrographic analysis was performed. As indicated
in Ray's talk bismuth (at less than 0.10%) was also
found in this coin; though the major metal was lead.
Thought it might be of interest to some. Roger M.
