John,
Spiro had three 54-ks. None of them were plated. Two are described as
EF and one VF. By today's standards, Spiro was conservatively graded.
The diagnostics for the first EF are striking weakness around the
rim. This unfortunately is a fairly common attribute of 54-ks on the
obverse from say 7:00 to 12:00. The second EF is described as more
sharply struck with a small planchet defect in the center. The third
VF is described as having a rough planchet.
Spiro envelopes are fairly distinctive. They are oversized with an
offwhite background and red and blue writing describing Hans
Schulman's 75th Anniversery.
Ray Williams is the Spiro guru. But my records indicate the fisrt EF
was purchased by Bareford and plated in his sale. The second and
third were purchased by unknown bidders and their present whereabouts
are unknown.
Hope this helps.
Roger S.
