Just another quick thought about the 2 Spiro 54-k's where we don't know who
the successful bidders were... Until recently, auction tickets and records
weren't kept by many. If dealers were successful at auction, they felt they
could get a better price for the coin if the buyer didn't know how much he
had spent of the coin. Fortunately that trend of thought has changed and
dealers realize that it doesn't matter what it cost them for the coin, if we
want it and it's priced fairly, we'll buy it and give him his profit.
That's where plated catalogs are great for pedigree research. It was only
by comparing the Maris 51-g I purchased in the Torok Sale, to plated 51-g's
in catalogs I own, that I discovered that it was the same coin that was in
the '76 EAC Sale and had Kessler in its pedigree. I don't have much hope
for identifying the two other Spiro 54-k's BUT maybe some information may
come to light...an auction envelope, precise collection inventories... you
never know.
Ray
