I was going to title this post 'too much time on my hands' for reasons which are
about to become obvious.
After a couple of years of looking unsuccessfully for the definitive, practical,
useable colonial condition census reference (ideally a small Roper catalog-
sized book with color photos of all the coins listed by type ranked in grade
order) I decided to create my own.
Step 1: Purchase every significant and almost every insignificant auction
catalog and FPL and reference book featuring colonial coins ever produced.
Though this was hard to explain to my wife, it was easier than explaining Step
2.
Step 2: Stack 500 catalogs on my dining room table in huge, precarious piles.
Step 3: Transfer the prices realized by hand into each catalog alongside the
lot description. I started doing this to make things easier, though it has turned
into an incredibly tedious effort which I now feel obligated to continue.
Step 4: List under every colonial type the top 5 examples I could find in all the
books..
Step 5: Scan or photocopy the lot description and plate photo of each coin
onto an 81/2 x 11 sheet and insert them into those clear pages that fit in three
ring binders, then spend even more time studying the photos and descriptions
and ranking them in order.
I'll post episode 2 'renting a cot at Kinkos' tomorrow if there is sufficient reader
interest.
