    Hi,

A few years ago I purchased an uncut pane of four NYC waterworks
notes. A recent XRay analysis indicates a trace presence of barium
(Ba) throughout the sheet. This may be bothersome, as Ba wasn't
isolated until 1808, and the absence of similar metals from the piece
suggests that the Ba 'contaminated' the sheet well after it was
supposedly printed. I was wondering if anyone can tell me what
chemicals might be used by a dealer to make old paper look better, or
if there are any particularly common acid free (and Ba containing)
mountings that might help explain the presence of Ba in this sheet.

    Thanks. Happy Holidays.
