Bill,
I have seen a couple of Mass half cents that were gilt. The Massachusetts
Act establishing the mint authorized the striking of copper, silver, and
gold pieces. Maybe someone was trying to make their own gold coin for
profit. To my knowledge, there is one white metal Mass half cent that I
believe was a test strike. I do not know of any gold or silver pieces
struck by the mint.
