As a more-recent history major than Mike -- which basically means that I had
to study all the current theoretical crap (some of which was undoubtedly
useful, but some -- like Post-Modern theory that denies pretty much anything
that a historian might find useful could cause one to tear their hair
out!)...and while Turner's theory per se is no longer in vogue, there are
certainly elements of it that have crept back in to the historical debate.
While the frontier itself is no longer seen as paramount to the creation of
the American psyche, the MENTAL frontier has been suggested as playing a big
role -- the fact that Americans are able to think, create, invent, produce
and profit from new ideas and new gadgets....a nice idea but pretty much
every country that isn't politically/socially/religiously oppressed would
probably have individuals that did the same thing as Americans. Needless to
say, these theories have ALL been formulated by American historians --
European historians still prefer to thing of the United States as a country
that is too young to have much history worth studying.
