Marc, The points you bring out are valid concerns. That is why most of the large auction houses use private insurance for sending coins back and forth. If you ask, they will insure a package sent to them for inclusion in their auction. I have been told many of the same things over the years, stated here. The only time I really went all out to get a refund was on a package I sent out. I came to find out that the desk clerk was a "temp" and that my receipt had no postal stamp on it, and was therefor invalid. Nothing they could do for me. I asked the postal authorities to take up the fact that the clerk was a temp and most likely pocketed the package, and they told me to be more careful next time. That was about 15 years ago, and I lost about $700( that was when $700 really meant something). I have always been more careful since. I usually will only send coins registered if the value is $250 or more. Talk about a racket. Then I make certain that I write a letter to the recipient saying that here are the coins we discussed, and value them( most often, I guess now that I think about it, not always) Note to self! I also keep a copy of the letter for me, just in case. I have not had a registered disappear as yet. Insureds are not properly handled by the PO either, sometimes they just leave them in the mailbox. No signing for them, nothing. If lost, not their problem? David
