Speak of the devil: I made the mistake of actually reading one of Jeff's epistles on one of the Connecticuts he had for sale on Ebay. My hand was so cramped pulling that little bar down to read more, that I had a "finger fart" as my daughter calls it and wound up beating somebody called auctori something or another for the coin. I have been addicted every since. Does addiction = serious ? That's another story. Morris Ray Williams <njraywms@optonline.net> wrote:Hi Jeff, You mention names of the old time (if I may) collectors. How about Dr. Hinkley, Stanley Sherr, Robison and Roper? Most of these figures spent a lot of time and energy on their collection (Hessberg being the exception on this list -- he bought a box of coins and pretty much never added another colonial), but they weren't well known. Does that make them any less serious? Many collectors prefer to keep a low profile and deal exclusively through dealers....such as the mystery collector whose Fugio collection was sold in the Marshall's sale.
We do have a problem with the word serious and its definition. If coin ownership is required, then Mike Hodder is not serious, and most dealers would not qualify as serious either, since they probably don't collect all the areas that they sell (Tony T. is the exception here!). If being a scholar of the series and publishing is the criteria, then we would never consider Garrett, Norweb, Brand, Roper, Oecshner and all the rest as serious -- obviously not a smart move.
Perhaps the best definition of a serious collector is one who enjoys this aspect of the hobby and who always wants to learn more about them, either through the coins themselves or through research performed by other people. A casual collector or a type collector will probably not want to spend 3 hours reading through one of Hodder's articles on a particular New Jersey reverse die, while a serious collector -- even one that owns few if any actual examples of that coinage -- will jump at the opportunity!
And Craig....if someone wants to come in with a big check at the next C4 and buy 100 different CT coppers from me in one fell swoop, I would be MORE than happy to consider them a serious collector!
Jeff
