A max and min diameter reading is a useful parameter for a coin. Over time,
you can build a significant database of such measures that will allow some
fairly secure generalizations about a variety.
As for me, I'm not concerned whether the coin is round or not (most aren't, not
really). rather, I use N/S and E/W diameters as data points that I assign the
same level of usefulness to as I do to weights and die axes (and, in some
cases, planchet thicknesses). The diametgers just go into the soup along with
everything else and I wait to see how it all tastes at the end.
