Re: [Colonial Numismatics] SnappleAs our research becomes more and more
computer based (or at least the final output), the use of Adobe PDF formats
    becomes more useful.

To generate a PDF file using Adobe Acrobat, you need a $249 list price
product (Adobe Acrobat 5.0). It can be obtained for as little as $220...
still a rich price for consumers.

There are alternatives; one I ran into today is put out by EHelp, a company
most known for a commercial help authoring product called RoboHelp (I have
used it for years). They also no make a PDF writer that integrates into
Word and other utility software. This product costs $49. According to
their web site, this is a special half price deal good through July. I
have not used this or any other Adobe alternative because my commercial
software relies on integrations unique to Adobe's product, but I assume it
    works fine.

But wait, there's more! They also offer a FREE home edition, licensed for
personal home use only (not commercial). It apparently adds a footer to
each page indicating that it came from the home version, or whatever. This
might not be appropriate for some uses, but it's free.

So... if you would like to be able to create PDF files but are turned off by
Adobe's price tag, there are alternatives and this is only one. Many
companies are jumping on this bandwagon due to Adobe's high price tag. Many
new software products are now PDF enabled, such as ScanSoft's OmniPro ocr
scanning software and Paperport desktop image organizer. I use paperport
to help manage my many gigabytes of images.

Note: I believe this is windows only; Mac users need not apply.

If anyone has further interest and needs help, let me know via this list.

Here is the link to Ehelp's PDF writer software. You want to click into the
RoboPDF 3.0 or Home Edition links.
