First off, I apologize if someone else has already commented on this. I have about 220 unopened daily digests from the two groups. So, I might well have missed something. I thought I'd bring it up since blacksmiths were being discussed.
Earlier this summer, I bought a low grade counterfeit copper from a dealer in Florida. Though the date is almost non-existent, I believe it is the same variety that Anton/Kesse listed as a 1794.
What struck me about it is the similarity in style to Wood 33. I know that 'style' is in the eye of the beholder and isn't very scientific. Indeed, there aren't many technical similarities. But, the planchets are virtually identical in size, weight and 'fabric'. The portraits' profiles seem very similar. The letters are different, but have a few elements in common. The stops are obviously different. The seated figures on my Wood 33's are too incomplete for a full comparison, but there are similarities.
The consensus seems to be that Wood 33 is an evasion rather than a blacksmith. This 1794 doesn't have evasive legends. If the similarities between these two pieces are any more than "wishful thinking" then evasions and later counterfeits may not be as clearly delineated as we think.
Also, I've seen the head left/Britannia right blacksmiths described as "George II" and as "George III, facing left". Given their supposed date of issue, could they in fact represent George IV?
Any thoughts? Thanks, Will.
