Russell,
It's nice to "see" a new face here!
A good start would be Crosby's Early Coins of America (1984 Quarterman
edition) and Breen's Encyclopedia of US and Colonial Coins. Also Phil
Mossman's Money of the American Colonies and Confederation, published by th=
e
ANS would be the next logical step as you get into more advanced topics.
If you take a liking to State Coinage, the Bowers & Merena Taylor Sale is
probably the single best Auction catalog for all State Coinage series. Als=
o
the relevant volumes of Bowers Norweb and Garrett sales, depending on the
series you are interested in. The upcoming Ford sales, of course, will be
THE reference of the 21st century.
Regards,

Greetings to all of the members in the club and thank you for having=20
me.
My name is Russell and I'm from Texas.
About a year ago I got started in collecting coind from Americas=20
colonial times with a flea market find.
I have been reading posts from this group for about two-three months=20
and have discovered that I have much to learn.
Your group has sparked an interest in early coppers but I belive in=20
buying the book and then the coin.To this end I would like your=20
opinion of just what book would be a good all around start for me.
Also I have a spanish siver cob that I think is from the 15 hundreds.
It is cut in about 1/4 and seems to bear the greek cross. The coin=20
has been cut down to about the size of a modern nickle.
I understand that this is not an important coin of the time and of=20
not much interest to the group as a whole, however I have posted=20
scans In a folder marked Russell in the photos section.
Any help in dating/denomination/etc. would be helpful.
Thank you in advance,
Russell Smith
