John, I cannot find the post, but you were questioning the Machin
attribution where there is no die sharing with colonial issues. In
    the B+M Sherr sale (6/84) there is a 73-aa overstruck on a 1747
Machin (lot 3268) which argues for U.S. circulation (and is
supportive of U.S. origin). Undertypes can provide insights, i.e.,
how few British counterfeits are found given their abundance versus
    the Machin type.
