Byron you make an excellent point concerning William III and AK-47. Not that I never really paid much attention to it as from the old school a dateless uniface piece usually was considered a Blacksmith this William III portrait made me think again for another possibility. As you may know a couple of years back Cobwright use to come out with a very short run of a FPL called HUMONGERTRON. Enclosed in a scan is a typical listing of some very desirable counterfeits. Off this list I purchased the 1714 cast William & Mary, 1695 William III in tin? and the George I 1719 cast.
My point is that over a period of several years with these William III issues I never seen a William III in copper and certainly not in a uniface die combination. How can four William III coins exist in good copper and be unifaced???
I still believe this is a William III portrait but it seems Byron it may have been severely backdated as I have never Cobwright offer a William III other than in cast or in a tin alloy.
I have sent an E-Mail inquiring if he has ever come across a copper or more accurately a bronze William III counterfeit and his opinion of AK-47. The uniface is still bothering me until I looked further in this catalog and for a William III pence Cobwright writes:
WILLIAM III, VLIELMVS and part of the portrait clear, o/w blank as made?,bz??
To me this is probably as you described with four pieces known and in a very rare metal (i.e., struck bronze?). Will follow-up if Alan gets back to me. He usually does.
