Mario, there IS an early die state 4-L completely free of the break...it is
quite rare, but I had one in my collection of CT's many years ago and have
probably seen 3 others over the last two decades. HOWEVER, these were NOT struck
on cast planchets -- these were on large planchets of good copper quality
(which caused Breen to speculate that they were Morristown Mint products). There
is a VERY dangerous cast copy out there which appears to be an early die state
coin (it isn't though -- on close examination it's clear that the Horned Bust
die break had been removed in the casting mold itself, and is not from an
early die state coin). I have seen dozens of these offered as genuine,
especially on ebay. They don't have a ring when tapped and sometimes you can see a
trace of the casting gate on the edge of the planchet. If this sounds like the
type of coin that you were offered....stay away!

    Hope this helps.

    Jeff Rock
