I also think that a grade is essential to each side, often times they are congruent, but often times, they are not, especially in the colonial world.

When the issue is 'condition census,' I would argue that condition is the average grade of two sides, or net grade, e.g., using the 70 point scale,=20 (XF 40+ VF 20)/2 =3D VF 30 net.
But, because grading standards and measurements can be very subjective,=20 this is all academic to the credence buy it if you like it.

Does anyone agree with me that grades should always be split Obv/Rev=20 as opposed to ONLY one grade for the entire coin.....I could own a=20 coin with a perfect mint state obverse that someone took a nail to on=20 the reverse....this coin could be light years better on the obverse=20 than the highest condition census coin but because of the reverse=20 damage, people have to look at an inferior obverse as the number one=20 coin. (which it is overall, but not taken seperately)
