I am out of town right now so I do not have any references handy, but I think in the middle of last year Morton&Eden in the UK auctioned off some (or all) of James Watt's (of Boulton&Watt) Tokens etc. They had been preserved in paper and in some cases metal containers since striking off the press circa 1800 and many were as Gem Red as Lincoln pennies.

When you next get a chance, take a look at some English tokens of
the late eighteenth century ("Conders") - admittedly, many were just
made for collectors as proofs, but still... and you will see
eighteenth century copper coins in extraordinary condition, many of
which go for very ordinary prices.
