Agreed. I think that's why Mike Hodder puts in coins that he has seen, or have been RELIABLY reported. Reliably being seen and graded by someone whose grading he trusts. Am I correct, Mike? I have a couple of Connecticuts that Tony Carlotto was nice enough to photo in B&W. Technically they are great photos, but the coins, really speak to you in person, whereas many on this group would not wish to own them based on the B&W photos. Any coins with "character" that are shot in B&W, really show the problems as if they were the central feature of the shot. Minor striations on the surface( which Conn.'s are known for) become canyons of voids in the metal in B&W. That is why I use a red background for my digital photos, as I can as closely as possible accurately show what the coin really looks like using MY camera. Other cameras may operate better with a different background. David

Good points David.=20=20 =20 I believe black and white for technical resolution is the best for illustration purposes. We live in a four-color world. Color can impart information that the B&W graphic does not. With digital databases, let's take advantage of technology, even though there is no perfection. Also, there will always be disputes over what qualifies for the actual condition census.=20 =20 Robert Laviana

It is my understanding that the gray book of early date LC's that Bill Noyes compiled a few years ago, was based upon his photos of the coins, with copies of them sent to each of the contributors for grading FROM the photos. I know one guy that backed out when he found out that all the grading was going to be done from the photos. It also must be remembered that color especially can be changed in photos, based upon what you want to show. Each of us has a color chart in our minds of what a coin should look like for us to want to collect it. sometimes we disregard it, but at least for common varieties, I think most of us try to adhere to it. Some liek tan, others are ok with olive, or chocolate. As Rob said earlier, many things cannot be conveyed thru a medium such as photos, like true luster for UNC coins. Now, that said, with M&G doing the EAC auctions, more lots are going to mail bidders than ever before, OR floor bidders are paying more for them due to mail bidders actually having a picture to help them decide what to realisticlly bid. Yes, pictures are great, and should be used, but there still is nothing quite like viewing in person. I never understood how I could bid whatever I wanted to by mail at an EAC auction, back in the day when I collected that Federal crap, and I never won ANYTHING! Then I went to my first EAC Convention, and looked at lots, and instantly understood. David

<<I agree Craig, but these EF coins that are so ugly that I'd rather own a VG, are ending up being listed as EF coins in census lists. Census lists are useful to some and of no use to others but they normally don't include lengthy descriptions. That was one of the things that bothered me about the NJ Census in Penny Wise - I used the grades given by the owners.=20 Sometimes those owners increased the grade over what was given in an auction catalog and on rare occasion, decreased the grade. There are other stories I could tell about grading and that census but it would serve no purpose. I agree though that us colonial guys don't want to fall into the same grading wars that plagued EAC and actually created factions. We all seem to get along just fine with how we do things now.>>>

Ray,

Understood, and agreed. But if I=E2=80=99m not mistaken, the LC census onl= y includes coins that the =E2=80=9Ccompiler of the data=E2=80=9D has either p= ersonally viewed, or that have been viewed by one or two trusted minions, or of which photographs were taken (?).

Due to technology advances since census data first began being recorded, I personally now believe it has become necessary (or even mandatory) that any CC listing become a photographic (film or digital) compilation, and not just one of descriptions. How that translates into using it in a catalog or other written work is another question.

Differences of opinion regarding even technical grades of coins will never go away=E2=80=A6.introduce =E2=80=9Cnet grading=E2=80=9D into the picture a= nd you=E2=80=99ve just screwed it up beyond any hope of ever getting it to work.

I don=E2=80=99t have answers to a lot of these questions, but ain=E2=80=99t= that half the fun of it?
