Testing a coin for the ring is always necessary, but how practical is it? D= ave Wznuk posted yesterday that he saw George III being made in Williamsbur= g and they all rang as well. Factors do play a major part in a coin's "ring= ". By comparison, you can have 2 copper planchets of the same size and weight= ,.......1 planchet is "new", produced this year 2004 and the other "old" pr= oduced in 1788,........they will ring differently, based upon some factors. First, the age of the copper. Like all metals, the metal's chemcal composit= ion breaks down with age versus enviroment. Oxidation, which is a form of c= orrosion adheres to the copper thus reacting on the surfaces of the planche= t implanting tiny micro corrosive agents,......enough corrosion also effect= s the weight in various degree adhered. New copper also was refined and in = todays process, a radioactive ingredient is used, this practice of refining= had been since 1939, so the new planchets chemical oriontation will be dif= ferent than the old copper planchet. Each of these factors will change the = "desciples",....which is the "pitch" of the "sound" that the planchet gives= off,........although, to a person and importantly depending on the person= s age, the rate of "pitch" will seem different,........apersons age will co= mpensate that persons hearing ability. So at Ray's workplace, could these t= est be done accurately? Unless he has the right equipment to preform such r= est, then accuracy maybe in opinion form as well. That's be great - very interesting to learn about the results.=20=20 Harmonics, as you say, may be a problem. A number of coins that I=20 have rung seem to play two notes.
Best,
