Roger - - et al
I need to do some research on that one because I believe that we are getting into an discussion regarding syntax rather than coinage. That is - "plantation" as opposed to "colony". I did define that Mother Country "made" a coinage for a Colony. In other words - made in the Tower Mint in London specifically for and by the request of the established government of Virginia Colony.
We might argue the same way for the "First United States Coin" - the Fugio Cent - but since it was produced under order of the Continental Congress it was not yet the "United States". etc.
To avoid these syntax problems I long ago adopted the term Early American to encompass the States issues, Colonial issues, Continental era issues and so on and pegged the end of that era as 1793 with the startup of the First United States Mint.
So where does this leave our French Colonies issues? Early American, of course.
