Jeff suggested it looked similiar to the Noe 6.1 listed in the Hains Collec= tion auction, Jan 2002 by Stacks. Here is the writeup on the coin and atta= ched I merged the holed coin with the photo from the Hains Collection. THE HAIN FAMILY COLLECTION OF MASSACHUSETTS SILVER=20
TUESDAY, JANUARY 15, 2002=20
VERY RARE N.6.1 PINE TREE SHILLING Lot# 110=20=20=20=20
1652 Pine Tree Shilling. N.6.1, Cr.-. Backwards N. Extremely Fine. 73.8 gns= . R-7 (conjectural, we have very little hard evidence for the rating of N.6= .1, just the observation that we have not recorded another). This is a very= pleasing large planchet Pine regardless of its Noe number. Both sides are = a nice, light silver gray in color. The coin is slightly heavy in weight an= d the edges have been carefully trimmed around in a series of short cuts gi= ving it a prismatic appearance. All the letters are on the flan, some runni= ng to or over the edge but all legible. The obverse looks soft at the botto= m and left, the former due to the late state of the die, the latter to how = the coin was made (the S bend runs across from 9:00 to 3:00 and both A on t= he left and T on the right are similarly weak). The center of the reverse i= s quite rough in appearance, due entirely to the late state of this workhor= se die. The 1991 ANS Exhibition Coin (No. 94). Altogether, a lovely coin an= d desirable as such, even if it were not an intermediate die state variety.
Ex Corrado Romano Collection (Stack's, June 16, 1987, lot 4).
