A couple of years ago, my son found this Large Cent at a very very isolated=
homesite in the middle of nowhere. At this site we found one 1797 Half Cen=
t, one Nova Constellatio, a few more early year large cents. I believe the=
newest coin was from around 1803.=20=20=20

With that said, there is no doubt the Large Cent in the pic was lost in the=
    early 1800's.=20
I posted a picture of the coin on the coin club forum and it started a rath=
er energetic discussion on how the cross mark got on the coin.=20=20
First they accused us of doing it (I really laughed at that) Then finally =
Michael Schmidt, (think that was his name) said that someone actually push=
ed the metal around on the coin to make the cross.

Well however it happened it did not happen in modern times, so my question =
is, any opinions on why this was done (boredom?) and how did they do it wit=
h what tools were available around first decade of 1800's!
